What’s a Transfer Deadline day if you don’t spend silly amounts of money on players as owners become dazed by the prospect of promotion that seems more and more impossible the longer you spend in the Championship.
It’s becoming more and more common for Mel Morris and Derby County to spend rather large sums of money in a bid to gain promotion, and this year round doesn’t seem like it’ll be much different either.
So who are Derby keeping their tabs on? Let’s have a look what names are doing the rounds.
Britt Assombalonga – Spark a meltdown in Nottingham… The Center forward who applies his trade just down the A52 has been strongly linked with a move to the Rams. Plagued with injury early doors, Assombalonga has proved to be pivotal for the Reds and could be on his way out as troubled times continue under the leadership of Fawaz Al Hasawi. For me this deal is very unlikely, but likely depending on other deals. If Chris Martin departs it clears wages, adds funds and makes a spot for the frontman. But going on the relationship between the two clubs it would be very difficult to get a deal done. One I would like to see happen but one that may not, especially as rumours of being offered a new contract are starting to emerge.
Chances of happening? 10%
A New right back – Having been linked with Andre Wisdom (a player that I think would complement us very well) again hopes of a potential deal were raised. However the young right back has instead gone to Red Bull Salzburg for this coming season. Christian Gamboa again someone linked with before has gone to Celtic so previous linked players are thin on the ground. However after a dismal start to the season, Cyrus Christie needs major competition to up his game otherwise this is definitely a weak spot for the side
A leader, a rock or passion enthusiast – One thing this current Derby side lack is a leader. Besides Shackell and Bryson, the leadership seems very thin on the ground. Nobody seems brave enough to bark out orders and take control of the side so this would be a massive addition. Perhaps this comes in the face of a new defender. A center back. Someone to partner one of the current duo who just goes about his business and gets the job done which is something as of late the side have struggled with. Pearson was quoted after the Burton game praising Craig Bryson and the level of commitment he optimises and this is something the side would greatly benefit from. Someone who wears the shirt with pride, someone with a little fight and willing to stand up and be counted.
Only time will tell who Morris, Rush and Pearson decide on bringing in but for me new signings are essential, but I feel outgoings will have to happen before hand. Derby require goals, as they currently sit bottom of goals scored this year, they urgently require some leadership as well as the importance of passion. Hopefully Pearson has seen this himself and will act accordingly.
Adding Matej Vydra was a very positive addition. Bringing goals, pace and a different option to the current attacking options. With this being the only signing so far, and at a hefty price of around £8million it may suggest that it’s the money holding back ownership from approaching for more signings.
